2008 - There have already been several Country Gentlemen tribute albums, but the neat thing about this release is that the group not only features three original members of that famous band (plus Charlie Waller’s son Randy), but they have wisely avoided repeating any of the old group’s recordings, which no one is likely to improve on or match. Instead they have chosen a good program of songs that the original group could have, but didn’t record. Nice versions here of GRAVE IN THE VALLEY, SUNDOWN AND SORROW....

2015 - (Dave) Adkins and (Edgar) Loudermilk are two powerful singers, and they have a strong record here on a dozen songs, all but two of them originals. Loudermilk plays bass and shares in the vocal lead and harmony work, while Adkins also sings lead and harmony. The backup instrumental work features Jeff Autry on guitar, Chris Wade on banjo, and Glen Crain on dobro.

2021 - It may not be too much to say that Darin and Brooke Aldridge are the reigning king and queen of bluegrass. This Life We’re Livin’ brims over with the piercing beauty of Darin and Brooke Aldridge’s ethereal harmonies, their ability to inhabit songs with emotional depth, and their musical and lyrical passion, intimacy, and honesty. 2018 - Consequently, if the band wants to rest on their considerable laurels by replaying their greatest hits with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble in tow, few fans would argue that they’ve earned the right to do so. That said, Mountain Overture equates to the Balsams’ best of, given the fact that the symphony and its strings are far from intrusive, and on some songs, hardly noticeable at all. That’s fine of course; these songs stand on their own and any opportunity for a reboot is one worth revisiting.

2021 - Balsam Range is a band that keeps up with the times not by pushing the game forward, but by pushing their game forward. They’re not reinventing the bluegrass wheel, but their constant refinements of their personal bluegrass mission statement, in this reviewer’s opinion, are just as impressive. The album includes the band's four most recent singles, each of which topped the bluegrass charts, and a new track heading for radio. Balsam Range is Buddy Melton (fiddle, lead and tenor vocals); Darren Nicholson (mandolin, octave mandolin, lead vocals, baritone and low tenor vocals); Dr. Marc Pruett (banjo); Tim Surrett (bass, dobro, baritone and lead vocals); and Caleb Smith (guitar, lead & baritone vocals).

While this new release may not be in the same maverick territory of The Deadly Gentlemen, there is no shortage of breadth to its coverage ranging from traditional American tunes to newgrass with elements of Celtic music, pop and jazz-tinged improvisation thrown in for good measure.
