2004 - incl. booklet - Lorraine Jordan of the band Carolina Road has produced this interesting and nicely done collection of 13 recordings by an even dozen women. Most of the vocals feature Kim Fox, Honi Deaton, Dale Ann Bradley or Gena Britt, all of them outstanding vocalists. The picking, which is also excellent, is handled by different combinations of Britt or Kristen Scott Benson (banjo), Cindy Cashdollar (dobro), Missy Raines (bass), Michelle Vance and Deanie Richardson (fiddles) and Lorraine Jordan (mandolin). The songs are a good mix of new and old and include LONE TREE STANDING, THE SWEETEST GIFT, JESUS HOLD MY HAND, I HOPE YOU HAVE LEARNED, POOR LITTLE SADIE, BLUER THAN BLUE, etc. A nice idea, well-executed.

2015 - This new issue reminds me of that set, which really was a labor of love, except that the new “package” includes snippets of the original musicians who trekked to Bristol to make some of the earliest rural music to come out on commercial records, including the first ever recordings of Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter Family. In the hands of a lesser producer, this project could easily have turned sour, but Carl Jackson, though based in Nashville, is a man of skill, integrity and good taste, and we thank him for this fascinating CD. Accompanied by a 24-page booklet of notes, the 2-disc set features 18 songs and tunes by such artists as Vince Gill, Doyle Lawson, Dolly Parton, Sheryl Crow, Jesse McReynolds and the Chuck Wagon Gang among others.

1991 - Most of this CD is imbued with soft, sublime sounds of the season, including Jerry Douglas's double-tracked dobro/guitar rendering of "Away in a Manger," Dan Crary's guitar and sleigh bells version of "What Child Is This?" and the stately bluegrass harmonies of John Starling, Larry Stephenson, and Rickie Simpkins on "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem." Robin And Linda Williams sing Steve Earle's "Nothing but a Child" as if it were a Yule folk standard. The all-female Ranch Romance vamp up Elvis's "Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me)" with sizzling accordion and fiddle, and Red Knuckles & the Trailblazers end the proceedings with a medley that'll make you "n'yuk n'yuk n'yuk."

2006 - Vern Williams and Ray Park were in the vanguard of the newly emerging bluegrass scene in the '60s, and although they were well respected within the bluegrass community, they were little known outside of it. They recorded a highly coveted four-song EP for Starday Records in 1962, as well as a scattering of other tracks that were later collected on the LP Sounds of the Ozarks, but the duo's studio output was minimal, which is part of what makes this pleasant live set from 1968 such a delight. Vern & Ray with Herb Pedersen: San Francisco 1968, recorded at San Francisco State College as part of the annual San Francisco Folk Festival, includes a young Herb Pedersen (banjo) and Howard Courtney (acoustic bass) joining Williams (mandolin) and Park (guitar and fiddle), and features a fluid bluegrass ensemble moving through an interesting set of genre standards. 

2006 - This record, Vincent says it's her 23rd between family and solo projects, covers a lot of ground, including a few songs about soldiers, religiously-themed songs, heartbreak and heartache and an instrumental (ASHES OF MT. AUGUSTINE, inspired by having seen a volcano while touring in Alaska). And she gets help on a few songs from heavyweights Dolly Parton and Bobby Osborne. Vincent co-produced with brother Darrin. 1996 - Rhonda Vincent's second major label disc is a wonderful piece of work. There is nothing fancy here, just straight forward "stone-country." You can feel the energy and intensity of this album from the first cut. She hits a high point with the title cut, which has enough energy to light up a city. Her strong bluegrass background serves her well on this upbeat tune. One of the strongest parts of the album is the song selection.
